Email "unsubscribed" status and targeted emails

How are unsubscribe link options applied to email addresses?

If a contact unsubscribes from one type of email, how does EA deal with the email address for other targeted email content types?  On contact records, the email simply shows “Unsubscribed” with no information about the specific email types.

Where do we specify the content of the targeted email?

Hi @scurtiskellogg Welcome to the community!

If someone clicks the unsubscribe link, that action is enforced at the email address level. That address is suppressed from all sends. If you want to give folks choices instead of all or nothing, set up Activist Codes with the Type = “Email Interests.” Those show up as checkboxes on the unsubscribe or preferences page and can also be added to sign up forms. They let supporters opt in or opt out of specific categories, but they do not override a global unsubscribe.

A few key points to highlight:

-Unsubscribe is a hard stop for that email address.

-Email Interests are choices people can turn on or off using Activist Codes.

-Because interests are Activist Codes, you can use them in Automations to apply or unapply and move people into or out of series.

What you will see in the record: the email field will simply say Unsubscribed if they clicked the link, like you've noticed. That is by design because suppression is global. Their category choices live as Email Interest Activist Codes on the person’s record. It is normal for someone to have an interest code and still be unsubscribed. They will not get mail until they resubscribe through a compliant flow.

When you are sending a message for a specific category such as your newsletter, build your audience like this:

Include people who have the Activist Code = Email Interest: Newsletter.

Rely on system suppression since EveryAction will automatically exclude Unsubscribed and Bounced.

Optional filters include has primary email, recent engagement, location, and similar

Hope this helps!

The “Unsubscribed” on the contact record is a global unsubscribe. If your organization wants to maintain subscriptions and offer constituents the opportunity to unsubscribe from one type of email but stay subscribed to others, then you’ll want to look into the Activist Code Types “Email Interest” to allow your subscribers to self-manage.
