Contribution Summaries are fields that are calculated based on donation history for both individuals and financial households. They include:
-
Lifetime Totals: The sum or count of all gifts over the entire donor history.
-
Highest Previous Contribution (HPC): The largest single contribution over the entire donor history.
-
Most Recent Contribution (MRC): The latest gift given.
-
First Contribution: The first amount ever given.
These fields can be used to segment donors, personalize ask strings, identify major gifts or planned giving prospects, and more effectively report on your fundraising performance.
Viewing and creating lists with Contribution Summaries
You can view these fields under Contribution Summary in a contact record.
These fields can also be seen under the Financial Household tab on the contact record. The summary for all designations and years is the default, but you can narrow that to see summaries for a particular designation or fiscal year.

Contribution Summaries expand upon your ability to search on contribution data by allowing you to search individuals or financial households using calculated fields including:
To begin your search, select the criteria you want to use from fields in the Contribution Summaries section of Create A List. You will first need to specify whether your query is based on individual or household giving, giving to a single designation (or any designation), and/or limited to recurring or one-time gifts.
Once you have selected these criteria, specify which summary fields you want to use to segment your file by choosing whether you want to look at the following fields:
Understanding Contribution Summary Fields
Lifetime Totals giving criteria
The Lifetime giving criteria allow you to choose records which meet the total lifetime summary amount or total overall number of contributions you specify. In the case of Financial Households, the search will look at a combined list of contributions from all members of the financial household. For example, you will be able to search for all donors whose combined lifetime giving is over $10,000, even if their individual giving is lower than that amount. The Total Attributed Amount or Attributed Contributions Count allow you to select records based on soft credit contributions that were attributed to individuals or members of the household.
Highest Previous Contribution (HPC)
HPC is the largest contribution given over the entire donor history. Since there is only one HPC value per contact record (or household), this search looks for any records with an HPC within your search criteria.
If you've used the designation filter, it looks for individuals whose HPC to that designation are within the amount, date, or other parameters you've set. For instance, you can find all people who are in households where the HPC was given in the past year, was over $1000, and was given online.
You can segment your list by choosing which donors' HPC falls within a range of amounts, which donors have an HPC that falls within a particular range of dates, specifying which donors have HPCs that are associated with specific Source Codes, Campaigns, or Channels.
The final three criteria are applied after you've narrowed your list by amount and date for the HPC. Choosing a Source Code, for example, without specifying an amount or date does not give you one single HPC for that Source Code but instead returns Individuals or Financial Households whose HPC is within the range you selected and has that Source Code applied for that particular contribution.
To understand the logic of this search, here is an example:
Imagine that you want your newest online fundraising campaign to target all households or individuals with an HPC of at least $100 and who gave that amount during the last year via online channels (regardless of whether their most recent donation was that high).
You would need to set three criteria:
-
Set the range for the HPC using Highest Amount to $100 in the left-hand box and
-
Set Highest Date to cover the last year. This would narrow your search to records for those whose highest contribution (of their entire donor history) was made in the last year. It would not include those whose HPC was made outside the specified time period.
- Finally you would select Highest Channel > Online to narrow the list to those whose HPC came via an online channel.
Most Recent Contribution (MRC)
MRC works in the same manner as HPC. The MRC is the last gift that was given. There is only one contribution that is labelled as an MRC and it has an Amount, a Date, a Source Code, a Campaign, and a Channel associated with it.
There are many ways to use this search, but it is most useful in helping you find your most recent donors so that you can send them renewals
First Contribution
First Contribution is the first gift that the donor gave. This search works in the same manner as HPC and MRC. Each donor's First Contribution has an Amount, a Date, a Source Code, a Campaign, and a Channel associated with it.
For example, you might choose to use the date picker to select all donors whose first gift was in a particular month, so that you can always send them renewal mailings in that same month.
Or, you could use the criteria to find all people whose first gift was via a particular channel or linked to a particular campaign, so that you can adjust future messaging based on that information. Keep in mind that there is only one First Contribution so if you have a donor who gave to a particular campaign or through a particular channel but that was not their First Contribution, they will not appear in your search.
Exporting Contribution Summaries from your list
Once you've run your list search, you can Export it using the Standard Text format. Use Customize Export to choose All-Time: Contribution Summaries or All-Time: Financial Household Contribution Summaries. This will give you a dropdown menu with a list of summary fields you can include in your export.
If you use the Direct Response Planner, these same fields are also available when customizing a direct response plan export.
You can also Export your list using the Contribution Aggregates Export template instead. This is a general purpose export and will include all the contribution summary fields for your chosen list of donors for each Designation.

Viewing Contribution Summaries in reports
Contribution summary fields can also be added to selected reports, including the Contributions Report, the Contribution Acknowledgement Report, the Premium Fulfillment Report, the Attributor Report, and many other reports you use to track your contributions.
You can include these columns on any of these reports to export or schedule to be emailed to you directly.
You can also see the contribution summaries for your entire donor base using Report Manager > Contribution Aggregate Report. This report is useful for reviewing the giving history of a list of donors.

The following is a detailed list of all the available contribution summary fields that can be included in your reports and how you should plan to use them.

- Number of Attributed Contributions: The number or quantity of contributions made by others attributed to the contact.

- Financial Household Number of Attributed Contributions: The number or quantity of contributions made by others and attributed to members of the Financial Household.
- Financial Household Total Amount of Contributions: The total amount in dollars of contributions made by members of the Financial Household. For example, if William Smith has given a total of $1,000 in his life, and his partner Constantine Smith has given $5,000 in her lifetime, the Financial Household total would be $6,000.
- Financial Household Number of Contributions: The total number of contributions made by members of the Financial Household.
- Financial Household Total Amount of Contributions in Last 365 Days: The total amount in dollars of contributions made by members of the Financial Household in the last 365 days.

Highest Previous Contribution (HPC)
When re-soliciting people or organizations for donations, it's important for fundraisers to know the most that has been given (and when), so you can customize the ask amount based on their highest previous gift. This saves you from asking a $10,000 donor for a $50 gift.

- HPC Source Code: The Source Code associated, if any, with the largest contribution made by a contact.
- HPC Source Code Path: The path of the Source Code associated, if any, with the largest contribution made by a contact.
- HPC12, HPC24, HPC36: The largest contribution made by the contact in the last 12, 24, or 36 months.

- Financial Household HPC12, HPC24, HPC36: The largest contribution made by any one of the members of the Financial Household in the last 12, 24, or 36 months.
Note that if the person has given the largest amount more than once, the date will be the most recent occurrence. For example, if the most someone has given at one time is $500, and they did that twice - on 10/5/16 and 10/12/16, the date displayed will be 10/12/16.
