Year-end giving comes with extra pressure—from donor questions to tax compliance deadlines. This section brings together the guidance you need to prepare, review, and send year-end gift receipts with confidence.

You don’t need to be an expert or know the system inside and out. Choose the task that matches what you need to do right now and follow the steps.

Safe to browse: This page is for orientation only. Nothing you do here will send emails or change donor data.

What This Collection Helps You Do

  • Prepare contribution data before sending receipts

  • Decide which donors should receive year-end receipts

  • Send gift receipts by email or postal mail

  • Track tax-deductible amounts when goods or services are involved

  • Respond quickly to individual donor receipt requests

Most tasks in this collection take 2–10 minutes once you know where to start.

Choose the Task That Matches What You Need to Do

Getting Ready for Year-End Receipts

Use these articles to understand requirements and confirm your data is accurate before sending anything.

Short on time? You can skip this section and come back later if you just need to send a receipt now.

Creating and Managing Receipt Audiences

Use this section to decide which donors should receive receipts and build the right list.

Sending Year-End Gift Receipts

Use these articles to deliver receipts to donors.

These steps are designed to send receipts safely and intentionally.

Tracking Tax-Deductible Amounts & Fair Market Value

Use this section when donations include goods or services, such as event tickets or premiums.

These tasks affect tax acknowledgements. Pause and review before proceeding.

Gift Acknowledgements for Special Cases

Use this section for less common situations that don’t follow the standard receipt flow.

Not Sure Where to Start?

  • A donor says they didn’t get a receipt: Go to Sending Year-End Gift Receipts

  • You’re worried about accuracy or compliance: Start with Getting Ready for Year-End Receipts

  • Events or premiums are involved: Go to Tracking Tax-Deductible Amounts & Fair Market Value

You can start anywhere in this collection and still move forward safely.

Can you send instructions on how to send gift acknowledgments by email when the donor pays by check and we are entering the contribution manaually? We already have the mail merge templats set up, but those are for printed letters. How do I save postage and printing and send them by email?

Thank you!

Could you please update your links to the EOY tax receipt resources? Each link beyond the FAQ page takes me to a blank “invalid page” and I am unable to find the information elsewhere.

Thanks!

@Happie Pingol is the only documentation/resource guide on end of year tax receipts the FAQ doc with just four questions and no how-to guidance?

HI @dustin. As of the moment, yes, that’s what we have. But we’re also looking to modernize this article along with its existing attachments to better serve and educate our customers. I’ll make sure to give you a heads-up as soon as it’s out.

@Happie Pingol okay the old EveryAction articles gave guidance - those were just deleted in the move to the Bonterra help center?

Hi @dustin! Yes, those were deleted since some of the data in those materials are outdated.

What? So there is NO GUIDANCE in how to create year-end tax receipts for donors, during the time of year we need to send them?

When will you be done? Will it be in time for the tax deadline for our donors?

I am looking for this as well.

When will EveryAction update its EOY tax letter process so that orgs can actually reach their donors by email? Running this process through Targeted Email--which does not have any way for supporters to resubscribe to an org’s emails if they unsubscribed once in the past--creates an extremely onerous burden on nonprofits. It means that we have to have at least two different processes--an email one and a mailer one--to send out our tax letters each year. And having to mail the receipts incurs additional costs for the nonprofit. Yes, there is an option to send directly from the contact’s record, but who has time to manually send receipts to hundreds of donors? Very dissatisfied with EveryAction and its customer service, which is probably just a bot anyway. Ugh.

Hi @jade  and @jweber  — thanks for calling this out. We completely understand the frustration, especially since this is the time of year when these guides are most needed.

The updated articles are already drafted and currently under review by our product team to confirm accuracy. Our goal is to publish them today; if anything slips, they’ll be live by early next week at the latest.

We appreciate your patience and will follow up here as soon as the updates are available

Hi @Kiki Elfendahl and @jweber! Thanks for flagging this. I’ve drafted an article titled “How do I send gift acknowledgments by email for manually entered check donations?” and it’s currently in QA with our product team to confirm accuracy.

We’re targeting publication by early next week. Thanks for your patience—we’ll share the link here once it’s live.

I need to create a contribution report that removes the non tax deductible amount of a fundraising event. Can someone help me with this? I’ve tried reports, list creation, and it seems impossible to seperate. If I do it manually, it will take me a very long time and I run the risk of making errors.

Hi @irvingburbano! If a Fair Market Value (FMV) has already been applied to your event, this allows the system to correctly calculate the Tax-Deductible Amount for each contribution. But if this isn’t the case for your event, you can always follow the steps from this newly published article, “How do I track tax-deductible amounts of contributions in bulk?”. I hope this helps.

thanks for the article. I made it to the bulk edit section but there was no option for FMV after browsing around and following different paths. Could it be that I need to activate this feature on my account? Is there a number I can call for support because my organization needs to get these tax letters out asap.
