Overview

When event tickets include goods or services (such as food, drinks, or merchandise), only part of the ticket price may be tax-deductible. To handle this correctly, you add a Fair Market Value (FMV) to each ticket level.

FMV is used to automatically calculate the tax-deductible amount for event contributions.

Result: Event ticket purchases reflect the correct tax-deductible amounts on donor receipts.

Before you begin

  • You are creating or editing a ticketed event

  • You know the Fair Market Value (FMV) of what attendees receive

    • FMV is the estimated value of the goods or services provided

    • It is not the ticket price

Estimated time: 3–5 minutes

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Create or edit a ticketed event

  1. Start from the EveryAction Home Page.

  2. From the left-hand menu, click:
Engagement → Events & Volunteers → Event List.

    • If you don’t see this, use Search for a page and type Event List.

  3. Click Add New Event or open an existing event.

  4. Select Ticketed Event as the event type.

You can add or update FMV for both new and existing ticketed events.

Step 2: Set Fair Market Value for ticket levels

  1. Complete the Event Details tab.

  2. Click the Tickets tab.

  3. For each ticket level, enter the Fair Market Value (FMV).

Enter only the value of what attendees receive (for example, a meal or gift).

Step 3: Save the event

  1. After completing all required fields, click Finish to save the event.

What happens automatically

  • FMV displays next to ticket prices on the event form

  • Ticket purchases record as one contribution per purchase

  • The tax-deductible amount is calculated by subtracting FMV for each ticket purchased

Compliance and safety notes

  • FMV affects donor receipts and tax acknowledgements

  • Review FMV carefully before saving

  • If you’re unsure about the correct value, pause and confirm before proceeding

Quick check

✅ FMV reflects goods or services, not ticket price

✅ FMV is set for each ticket level

✅ Event saved successfully

If all are true, you’re done.
