If a merge is not completing, one of a few specific conditions is likely blocking it. Review each item below until you find the one that matches your situation.
Common Reasons a Merge is Blocked
You do not have editing permissions for one or both records
Merging requires editing access to both contact records. Check with your administrator to confirm your permissions, and in multi-committee setups, confirm you have committee access for both records.
You cannot see conflicting Custom Field values on both records
If one or both records have Custom Field values (organization-specific fields) you do not have permission to view, the merge cannot proceed. Contact your administrator to request access or have them complete the merge.
You are trying to merge an Organization record with a Person record
Both records must be the same contact type. An Organization record cannot be merged with a Person record. Confirm the contact type of each record before attempting to merge.
Your organization files Disclosure Reports
If your organization files Disclosure Reports and the secondary record (the record being merged into another contact) you are trying to merge is already associated with a contribution or disbursement, the merge will be blocked for compliance reasons. You can only merge when the secondary record has no contributions or disbursements. If you're unsure whether your organization files Disclosure Reports, ask your administrator.
The secondary contact record is linked to a Public User ID
Records linked to a Public User ID (commonly used for canvassing activities), typically used by canvassing organizations, cannot serve as the secondary record in a merge. Contact your administrator for guidance.
Still Unable to Merge?
If you have reviewed all of the above and still cannot complete the merge, contact the EveryAction Support team.
If you need to de-duplicate a very large number of records, your organization may need to work with the EveryAction data team to complete the process efficiently.
