How do I create and use Targeted Email Groups?
Email Groups let you send different versions of the same message to overlapping audience segments — without any contact receiving more than one version. Follow the steps below.
Tip: Before you begin, consider creating source codes and a campaign to help you track responses across the different emails in your group.
Step 1: Create a new Email Group
From the Targeted Email dashboard, select Create New Email > Create an Email Group.
Step 2: Add emails to the group
Create the emails you want to include in the group using either the Drag & Drop or Classic editor. You can create new emails or reuse existing ones by selecting Create From Existing.
Note: A/B test case emails cannot be created within an Email Group.
For each email, add your audience, compose your message, and review settings before adding it to the group. You can edit any email in the group after saving if you need to make changes.
You can add up to 10 emails per group.
Step 3: Set the sending priority
After adding all your emails, put them in priority order using the drag handles. Contacts who receive a higher-priority email are automatically excluded from lower-priority emails in the group.
Think in widening circles: put your most specific or highest-priority audience first (for example, Board members, major donors) so they’re excluded from broader versions of the message. Then widen out to less specific audiences.
Step 4: Confirm and calculate recipients
Use Calculate Recipients to confirm how many people will receive each email. Open each email’s details to see how many addresses are duplicates from previous emails and will be skipped.
Recalculate recipients after reordering your emails — the totals change as deduplication adjusts.
If an email ends up with zero recipients after deduplication, adjust your audience searches or reorder the emails.
Step 5: Review, send, and track
Group emails appear in the Pending, Drafts, or Sent sections of the dashboard, nested under the group name. Select Show group emails to expand them.
To cancel a pending group, select Cancel Group from the dropdown. To edit and reschedule, select Cancel & Edit Group.
To update a specific email within the group, click its name. Changing one email’s audience may affect others — recalculate recipients for the whole group after any changes.
You can delete an email from the group using the dropdown.
To see performance for the entire group, use the Email Comparison Report and filter or group by Email Groups.
