How do I evaluate Optimized Asks with A/B testing?
A/B testing is a reliable way to measure whether Optimized Ask is improving your results compared to a standard ask. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Build your audience
Select an audience large enough to generate statistically meaningful results. Aim for at least 25 contributions in both your Optimized Ask group and your control group.
Since Optimized Ask only generates personalized amounts for supporters who’ve donated in the past 24 months, make sure enough of your recipients are previous donors. If your typical conversion rate is 1%, send to at least 5,000 recipients to expect 50 contributions.
Step 2: Create your email and set up your test cases
Create an email with a fundraising link to an Online Actions contribution form.
Control variant (standard ask): On the Compose Message step, uncheck Use predictive analytics to automatically personalize ask amounts for this email. This turns off Optimized Ask for this variant.
Test variant (Optimized Ask): Select Add a Test Case to create a second variant. Check Use predictive analytics to automatically personalize ask amounts for this email. Name each variant clearly so you can tell which is which.
Step 3: Set recipient breakdown
On the Review step, send to 100% of your list so both variants receive a meaningful number of recipients.
Step 4: Track results
Use the Email Test Case Comparison Report to monitor performance. The most useful metric is Amount Raised per Recipient — the difference between your two variants here reflects the impact of Optimized Ask.
For more accurate results, the more conversions you receive for both variants, the more reliable your conclusions will be.
