Understanding Email Personalization
Email Personalization Overview
Personalizing a Targeted Email means showing each recipient information that’s specific to them — their name, their donation history, their local chapter, or a contribution ask that’s calibrated to what they’re likely to give. You don’t need to create a separate email for each supporter. You write one email and use merge fields, conditional content, and variables to make the message feel tailored for each person who receives it.
EveryAction’s Targeted Email supports several levels of personalization. At its simplest, a merge field like {{FirstName}} pulls a contact’s name directly from their record. More advanced techniques let you show entirely different sections of an email depending on a contact’s state, most recent gift, or contribution history — and let you calculate suggested donation amounts dynamically for each recipient.
Optimized Ask Amounts give you a powerful option without any configuration: when enabled, EveryAction automatically generates personalized ask amounts for each donor based on their past giving patterns. If you need more control — for instance, to test a specific ask strategy or apply custom multipliers — merge fields, macros, and variables let you build your own logic.

How This Feature Supports Your Work
| What the Feature Does | Why It Helps You | Real-World Volunteer Use Case |
| Merge fields pull data from contact records | Each recipient sees their own information without manual editing | A coordinator adds {{FirstName}} so every supporter gets a greeting with their name |
| Conditional content shows different sections to different recipients | One email reaches multiple audiences with relevant messaging | A staff member shows a Massachusetts-specific event invite only to MA contacts |
| Optimized Ask Amounts auto-generate contribution suggestions | Donors see asks matched to their giving history without any manual calculation | An administrator sends a fundraising email and EveryAction automatically suggests personalized amounts for each donor |
| Variables let you create custom placeholder values | You can use values that aren’t available as standard merge fields | A staff member creates a variable for the organization name so multiple affiliates can use the same email template |
| Contribution merge fields (HPC, MRC) link to a donor’s giving record | You can ask donors for amounts tied to their actual giving | A coordinator uses {{HighestPreviousContributionAmount}} to create an ask based on each donor’s largest previous gift |
