Follow the steps below to apply or adjust suppressions when building a contact list in EveryAction. Suppressions filter out contacts based on their record status, such as bad addresses or deceased contacts, so your results only include the people you actually want to reach.
Note: Applying or adjusting suppressions does not change any contact records. It only affects which contacts appear in your current search results.
Before You Begin
If you are not sure what suppressions are or what each suppression field means, start with Understanding Contact Record Suppressions in EveryAction before completing the steps below.
To apply suppressions, you will need access to Create-a-List. If you do not have access, check with your administrator.
Step 1: Open Create-a-List
-
From the EveryAction Home Page, hover over the left-hand navigation menu and choose Contacts, then click Create-a-List.
Contacts > Create-a-List
-
If you do not see it in the menu, use the Search for a page field in the left-hand navigation and type Create-a-List.
Step 2: Review the Default Suppressions
When you open Create-a-List, some suppressions are already enabled by default. Before running your search, review the suppression options to make sure they match what you need for this particular list.
Take a moment to consider who you are trying to reach and whether any default suppressions should be adjusted.
Step 3: Adjust Suppressions as Needed
You have two options:
- Leave the default suppressions in place if they fit your needs. This is the most common approach for general mailing lists.
- Remove All Suppressions if you want your search to return every matching record regardless of status. Select the Remove All Suppressions link to do this.
You can also enable or disable individual suppressions to fine-tune your results. For example, you might keep the Exclude Deceased suppression on while removing the NCOA filter if you still want to reach contacts who have moved.
Step 4: Run Your Search
Once you have reviewed and adjusted your suppressions, run your search as usual. Your results will reflect the suppressions you have set, automatically excluding any contacts who match the filtered statuses.
What If a Contact Is Missing from My Results?
If you expected a contact to appear but they are not showing up, a suppression may be filtering them out. Check the contact record directly to see if any of the following statuses apply:
- Their voting or mailing address has been marked bad
- hey have been marked as deceased
- Their record has been flagged as an NCOA address
- A canvass result code such as Moved, Wrong Number, or Do Not Walk was applied to their record
If you need the contact to appear in your results, you can adjust or remove the relevant suppression for your current search. This does not change the contact record itself.
For a full explanation of each suppression field and what triggers it, see Understanding Contact Record Suppressions in EveryAction.
