How do I link a check contribution to a recurring commitment?

Follow the steps below to manually enter a check payment and connect it to an existing recurring commitment so EveryAction can track it correctly. This helps you see all of a donor’s contribution records in one place, keeping their giving history clear and organized.

 

Before You Begin

Make sure you have:

  • Already created the recurring commitment on the donor’s record
  • The check details on hand: amount, date, and payment method

Step 1: Open the Donor’s Contact Record

Navigate to the contact record of the donor who sent the check.

Tip: Use the search for a contact field in the sticky bar at the top of EveryAction if you need help finding the contact.

Step 2: Add the Contribution to the Record

Add a new contribution to the record. If you need step-by-step help with this part, refer to

 

As you fill in the contribution form, make sure these details match the recurring commitment record:

  • Amount
  • Date
  • Payment method
  • Any other relevant information

 

When you reach the contribution status field, set it to Settled. Then save the contribution.

 

Step 3: Verify the Link Was Made

EveryAction will automatically link the contribution to the recurring commitment when you save.

Tip: You do not need to manually connect them—saving with matching details is all it takes.

 

Tip: If you need to update any details on the contribution later, you can edit it anytime without affecting the recurring commitment.

Step 4: Confirm the Link in Two Places

Once you save, you should see the link confirmed in two places. Check both:

 

On the contribution record:

A section labeled Commitment Information will appear. This confirms the link was made successfully. You’ll see details including:

  • VAN Recurring Commitment ID
  • Installment Number
  • Frequency
  • Start and End Dates

 

On the recurring commitment record:

The contribution will also show here, and the Total Amount Received to Date field will update to reflect the new payment.
