How do I reset Multi-Factor Authentication?

We’ve made some updates to our login experience! If you come across references to “ActionID” in our help resources, those are being updated to reflect the new name: Bonterra Account. Nothing changes on your end as we tidy up the documentation.

Overview

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security when users log in. If a user can’t access their account due to MFA issues, admins with the correct permissions can reset MFA so the user can set it up again.

This article walks through how to view a user’s MFA status and reset MFA, using the updated EveryAction navigation.

Before you begin

Prerequisites

  • You must be a State, National, or Committee Admin

  • You must have the security functions required to reset MFA

  • You can only reset MFA for users you administer

Important

  • MFA resets are hierarchical.

  • If you are an admin and need your own MFA reset, you must contact Support .

Step 1: Navigate to Users

  1. Start from the EveryAction Home page.

  1. From the left-hand menu, go to Administration > Users, Profiles, and Committees > Users

Tip: If your left-hand menu looks different, use Search for a page and enter Users.

Step 2: Find the user

  1. Use the available filter options to search for the user.

  1. Select Refresh Results.

  1. Click the user’s name to open the User Details page.

Step 3: View Multi-Factor Authentication status

  1. On the User Details page, locate the Bonterra Account Profile section.

  1. Review the Multi-Factor Authentication enablement status.

If you have the required security functions, you will also see the option to reset MFA for the user.

Step 4: Reset Multi-Factor Authentication

  1. In the Bonterra Account Profile, select Reset All.

What to know

  • If a user has multiple MFA methods, all methods are reset at once.

  • Individual MFA methods cannot be reset separately.

Step 5: Re-link the user’s Bonterra Account

Resetting MFA unlinks the user’s Bonterra Account from their account.

After resetting MFA:

  • You must resend the Bonterra Account invitation

  • The user will not regain access until the invitation is accepted

Optional: Filter users by MFA enrollment status

When searching for users, you can apply the MFA Enrollment Status filter to see whether users are enrolled in MFA .

Common pitfalls

  • Resetting MFA without resending the Bonterra Account invitation will leave the user locked out.

  • Admins cannot reset their own MFA.

  • If you do not see the Reset All option, you likely lack the required security functions.
