How does Contact Matching work in the OneCause → EveryAction Integration?

When a OneCause supporter comes through the sync, EveryAction uses a specific order of logic to decide whether to create a new contact or link to an existing one. Understanding this helps you avoid duplicates and manage your data confidently.

Step 1: The system checks for a matching OneCause Supporter ID

First, EveryAction looks for an existing contact with a matching OneCause External ID. If one is found, the new activity is linked to that contact. No new record is created.

Step 2: If no ID match, the system checks email address

If no External ID match is found, EveryAction matches on email address using the same logic as Online Actions (where the email is known with certainty). If a match is found, the activity is linked to that contact.

Step 3: If no match is found, a new contact is created

If neither an External ID nor email match is found, a new contact is created in EveryAction and the activity is linked to it.

Step 4: Know the edge cases

  • If multiple EveryAction contacts share the same email address, the system links to the contact with the lowest contact ID (the oldest record). There is no additional name-matching step to choose between them.

  • New contacts synced from OneCause default to "not subscribed" for email. Existing subscription status is never overwritten.

  • If you're seeing unexpected duplicates, the most common cause is contacts that existed in EveryAction without an email address or with inconsistent email data. Contact support with the specific details if this happens.
