We just pulled a list of folks who only have one email that is marked as not subscribed but are still receiving emails. There’s a lot! Could someone explain why that is happening?

Hi @HAD I’m not certain on your particular database or contacts in question but this discussion might help?

If not, LMK and we can continue to discuss!

It sounds like @HAD was saying that people who are marked Not Subscribed have been receiving Targeted Emails. Is that right, HAD? If so, I don’t believe that should be happening and sounds like something you should report to Bonterra Support.

However, if they are receiving other types of transactional emails--like Triggered Emails or the Thank You confirmation emails from the last step of Online Actions Forms--that is normal, since transactional emails are allowed to be sent regardless of subscription status since they are tied to an event.

Without more detail on what’s happening, we can’t say for sure. Let us know, HAD!

Yes exactly - people with emails marked as Not Subscribed are receiving Targeted Emails and basically look like they are fully subscribed. The contacts I’m looking at only have one email (i.e. it’s not like they’re receiving the Targeted Emails to a different, subscribed email).

@HAD thanks for the details. I just logged a support ticket on your behalf.

@Liz Ragland I had that same problem.  When we sent a mass email to our subscribed members, the email also went to some email addresses that are not subscribed.  These were secondary email addresses, that included office managers, assistance, spouse personal emails etc.  We did not suppress them because we did not think any email addresses that are not subscribed would receive the email.  Could not figure out why this happened.

Hi @tallison! I’m wondering if this happened when your org first bulk uploaded these contacts. During the mapping process, the bulk upload tool may have defaulted these secondary email addresses to “subscribed.”

What you can do to check this

  1. Run the Email Address Status Report (Report Manager) and filter by Subscription Status = Subscribed to identify all email addresses currently eligible to receive mail.
  2. Mark secondary emails as "Not Subscribed" — From the Email Address Status Report, use Report Actions > Export & Apply Bulk Actions to bulk-update secondary addresses to Not Subscribed. This is the correct status for secondary emails — it preserves the address for future use without triggering sends.

If that’s not what’s happening, this may need a support ticket so someone from our team can go through and dig into what could be happening.
