What is the Milestones/Goals field actually for?

I am having a hard time understanding what the Milestones/Goals field is actually for. It seems like it is just a masked radio button field with preselected backend values (1 through 10) and colors associated with each option. I don’t understand why the colors that were chosen for each option are what they are, and it doesn’t seem like you can change them. I am just having a hard time understanding why this is a separate field type than the masked radio button field type. It doesn’t seem like the Milestones/Goals field type is actually that helpful to track Milestones/Goals, and there is very little information about the field type in the Help Center part of this site. 

Any insights as to what this field actually does, or why it exists as a separate field type than the masked radio button field type would be appreciated!

Hey ​@Hollie C. , this is a legacy field type. While it’s still available, it’s not used very often. You are correct that it acts the same as a Masked Value field. Depending on your needs, I would use another type in this category since you will have more flexibility to customize. The other Masked Value fields can be set up to track goal progress as well with custom milestones and values. For reporting you can either track who meets certain goals or use Comparison Reporting to show change over time in pursuit of the ultimate goal.

    Hi ​@Hollie C.! The Milestones/Goals field was meant to collect progress data on indicators or outcomes in your program.

    The color progression you mentioned also tells a story. Brown ("1") represents your starting point, and tan ("10") represents your target goal. The different colors can make it easier to visually distinguish where someone is in the progression—so when you record data over time, you can see at a glance how far someone has come toward that target.

     

    I'd also love to hear from other members on this—our teams might have some additional insights to share too.
