Amounts in excess of FMV

How do amounts paid in excess of FMV get reported in NFG as donations? Do these have to entered manually or are theytransferred automatically from the Event to the person’s donation.  Example, person purchases a table for the Gala for $850.  The FMV is $560.  How does the remaining $290 get credited as a donation?

Hi ​@Adrienne Wurster ! When the ticket type is created, you can set up the FMV then. On the donor’s receipt it’ll show:

  • Total Amount they paid
  • FMV
  • Tax-deductible difference (donation)

In Donor Management, you’ll see the ticket cost reported. When you go into Transaction Details, that’s where you’ll see FMV reported.

Related to this, shouldn’t sponsorships of the gala be reported as a donation.  Again they only show up on the Event side.  How are they supposed to get to the donation side of the NFG program.

Sponsorships can also have a FMV when you set it up. It’ll apply the same logic as mentioned here with the ticket purchases.

In both cases, tickets and sponsorships show up in the Giving tab and have a different line, separate from donations. You will see it exclusively as a ticket purchase… it won’t separate it into two different transactions (like one for ticket FMV and one for donation). 

On the Event campaign side of things, you can Edit your Event and choose what factors into your campaign goal. By default, it’s just set to donations. But you can also check boxes for Tickets and Sponsorships.

So the excess over the FMV is never reported as a donation?  Therefore when the donor’s annual amount donated is reported, it does not reflect the amount over the FMV for the ticket or sponsorship.  Is that correct?

That is correct. It will only reflect in your software as a ticket purchase or sponsorship. Those unfortunately also do not impact donor statuses. So if someone is a Lapsed donor but buys a ticket, they would stay a Lapsed donor. Thankfully though for the donor, it reflects correctly for them in their receipt!
